Avainet

Avainet is a theoretical framework for a global, secure key management and authentication network designed to operate across diverse devices and services. It aims to reduce reliance on centralized identity providers by using a decentralized directory of cryptographic keys and a standardized protocol for exchanging, verifying, and revoking keys.

The concept emerged in academic and industry discussions in the late 2010s as part of broader work on scalable, privacy-preserving identity systems. Avainet is described as an open standard with reference implementations and testbeds, rather than a single commercial product or service.

Architecturally, Avainet envisions a distributed directory of public keys and device attestations, supported by hierarchical trust anchors and threshold cryptography to enable multi-party authorization. Proponents highlight potential benefits such as reduced single points of failure, improved credential portability, and enhanced user privacy.
