Automuuntimet, also known as automatic transmissions, are a type of vehicle transmission that automatically changes gear ratios as the vehicle moves, eliminating the need for manual shifting by the driver. They are widely used in modern cars, trucks, and other motor vehicles, offering convenience and ease of use compared to manual transmissions.

Automatic transmissions function using a combination of hydraulic systems, torque converters, and planetary gear sets. The torque converter replaces the clutch found in manual transmissions, transmitting power from the engine to the transmission without physical contact. Hydraulic pressure controls the engagement of gears, allowing the transmission to shift smoothly between ratios based on vehicle speed, engine load, and driver input.

The most common type of automatic transmission is the traditional automatic, which uses a torque converter and planetary gears. More advanced systems, such as continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) and dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs), have gained popularity for their efficiency and performance. However, they may consume more fuel than manual transmissions in certain conditions and can be more complex and costly to repair. Modern automatic transmissions incorporate features like adaptive shifting, manual shift modes, and paddle shifters to enhance driver control and responsiveness.
