Autologisen

Autologisen is a Finnish term used to describe material, tissue or cells that originate from the same individual as the recipient. In medical contexts it corresponds to the English term autologous. The word is formed from auto- meaning self and a Finnish suffix that denotes origin or relation; in usage, autologisen appears as an inflected form modifying nouns such as kantasolusiirto or verenluovutus.

Common applications of autologisen in medicine include autologisen kantasolusiirron (autologous stem cell transplantation), autologisen verenluovutuksen (autologous blood donation) and autologisen kudos- tai solutuotteen käyttö potilaalle. Autologisia procedures are contrasted with allogeneisia, where the donor is another person, or xenogeneisiä, involving a different species.

The main advantages of autologisen approaches are reduced risk of immune rejection and avoidance of disease transmission from a donor. Because the material comes from the patient themselves, there is typically no need for matching between donor and recipient, and certain post-treatment complications linked to donor immune reactions are minimized. However, autologisen therapy is limited by the available quantity and quality of the patient’s own tissue, and there is potential risk of reintroducing malignant cells in cancer therapies or other contaminants during processing.

In medical literature, autologisen usage emphasizes individualized treatment using the patient’s own biological material, highlighting ethical and logistical considerations related to collection, storage and handling of autologous sources.
