Autoclave-assisted refers to processes conducted in an autoclave or under autoclave-like conditions, where elevated temperature and pressure are used to drive chemical reactions, material synthesis, or curing. An autoclave is a robust, pressure-rated vessel that provides saturated steam at controlled temperatures, enabling hydrothermal or solvothermal environments. In chemistry and materials science, autoclave-assisted synthesis or polymerization uses high temperature and pressure to increase reaction rates, alter solubility, and stabilize phases that are inaccessible at ambient conditions. This approach is widely used for crystalline inorganic materials, nanostructures, and advanced polymers.

Common examples include hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites and metal oxides, the formation of carbon nitride materials, and polymerization or crosslinking under pressure. Autoclave-assisted curing is essential in the fabrication of high-performance composites, where post-curing under pressure improves resin crosslinking, reduces voids, and enhances mechanical properties. In energy storage and catalysis, autoclave conditions enable the growth of uniform nanoparticles and the formation of active catalytic phases.

Operational parameters such as temperature (often 100–250°C), pressure (from a few bars up to several megapascals), solvent system, and reaction time are chosen to control phase formation, particle size, and crystallinity. Benefits include enhanced crystallinity, phase selectivity, and uniform morphology; limitations involve equipment cost, safety considerations related to high-pressure systems, and scale-up challenges. Autoclave-assisted methods continue to be used across chemistry, materials science, and engineering to enable otherwise inaccessible materials and composites.
