Authenticatieapps, also known as authenticator apps, are software applications used to enhance online security through a process called multi-factor authentication (MFA). These apps typically generate time-based one-time passwords (TOTPs) or one-time passwords based on event sequences (HOTPs) that are used in addition to a user's regular password to verify their identity. When a user logs into a service that supports MFA via an authenticator app, they will be prompted for their password and then a code generated by the app. This second factor makes it significantly harder for unauthorized individuals to gain access, even if they have compromised the user's password.

Common authenticator apps include Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Authy. They are available for most mobile operating systems. The setup process usually involves scanning a QR code provided by the online service or manually entering a secret key. Once linked, the app will display a rotating code that changes every 30 to 60 seconds, ensuring that each login attempt requires a fresh, time-sensitive credential. Many services also offer push notifications through these apps, allowing users to approve or deny login attempts with a simple tap, further streamlining the MFA process. Using authenticator apps is widely recommended by security experts as a robust method for protecting online accounts.
