Auswurfports

Auswurfports, also known as discharge ports or ejection ports, are openings found on many firearms. Their primary function is to allow spent casings, also called cartridges or shells, to be expelled from the firearm after a round has been fired. This process is crucial for the proper functioning of semi-automatic and automatic firearms.

When a firearm is discharged, the expanding gases from the ignited propellant drive the bullet down the barrel. This same action also forces the bolt or slide to the rear, extracting the spent casing from the chamber. The auswurfport is strategically located to align with the extractor and ejector mechanisms, guiding the spent casing out of the action and away from the shooter. The design and placement of the auswurfport can vary significantly depending on the firearm's make, model, and operating system. Some auswurfports are simple openings, while others may incorporate baffles or deflector fins to direct the ejected casings away from the shooter's face or body. The presence and size of an auswurfport are also distinguishing features of different firearm types. For instance, pistol auswurfports are typically smaller than those found on rifles.
