Auskultant is a term that has evolved in meaning over time, historically referring to a medical practitioner or student who listened to bodily sounds, often using a stethoscope. This practice, known as auscultation, involves listening to internal sounds of the body, primarily the heart, lungs, and intestines, to assess their condition. Early auscultants would often place their ear directly on the patient's body. The invention of the stethoscope by René Laennec in 1816 revolutionized auscultation, making it more precise and less intrusive.
