Aulii

Aulii is a term that appears in several distinct contexts, primarily as a proper name in Polynesian cultures and as an identifier in contemporary media and geography. In Polynesian languages, the name is often associated with elevated or lofty places, deriving from root words that connote height or prominence. Consequently, Aulii is sometimes used as a descriptive name for peaks, high mesas, or strategic observational points in the South Pacific archipelagos.

In contemporary usage, Aulii is best known as the name of a small but ecologically significant island located within the Marquesan subgroup of the Society Islands. The island covers less than one square kilometre and is characterized by its steep volcanic cliffs, basaltic rock outcrops, and a limited stretch of sandy beach. The island’s vegetation is dominated by native littoral shrubs and low-lying rainforest species, including several endemic plant taxa that have attracted botanical interest. The surrounding marine area hosts diverse coral communities, making it a minor but notable site for marine biodiversity studies.
