Augnþrýstingur is the Icelandic term for intraocular pressure, which refers to the fluid pressure inside the eye. This pressure is maintained by a balance between the production and drainage of aqueous humor, a clear fluid that fills the front chambers of the eye.

Elevated intraocular pressure, known as ocular hypertension, can be a risk factor for developing glaucoma, a serious eye condition that can lead to irreversible vision loss. However, not everyone with elevated intraocular pressure will develop glaucoma. Conversely, some individuals with normal intraocular pressure can still develop glaucoma.

Intraocular pressure is typically measured using a tonometer during an eye examination. The normal range for intraocular pressure is generally considered to be between 10 and 21 millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Pressures consistently above this range may warrant further investigation by an eye care professional.

Factors that can influence intraocular pressure include age, genetics, certain medical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and the use of some medications, particularly corticosteroids. Eye injuries and certain types of eye surgery can also affect intraocular pressure. Management of elevated intraocular pressure often involves prescription eye drops, and in some cases, laser treatment or surgery to improve fluid drainage from the eye. Regular eye check-ups are important for monitoring intraocular pressure and detecting any potential issues early.
