Augeninnen

Augeninnen is a descriptive term for the interior of the eyeball, that is, the structures located inside the scleral shell and beyond the cornea. It encompasses the three fluid-filled compartments and the tissues that line and populate them.

The eye’s interior includes the anterior chamber (between the cornea and the iris), the posterior chamber (between the iris and the lens), and the vitreous chamber (behind the lens). The anterior and posterior chambers contain aqueous humor, a clear fluid that nourishes the cornea and lens and helps maintain intraocular pressure. The lens sits behind the iris and focuses light on the retina, while the vitreous body fills the vitreous chamber and provides structural support.

The retina lines the inner surface of the back of the eye and contains photoreceptor cells that convert light into neural signals. The optic nerve transmits these signals to the brain. The uveal tract, consisting of the iris, ciliary body, and choroid, provides blood supply and, in the case of the iris and ciliary body, regulates pupil size and lens accommodation.

Common conditions affecting the Augeninnen include glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure impacting the optic nerve), cataract (lens opacity), retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, and inflammatory diseases such as uveitis. Diagnostic approaches involve slit-lamp examination, ophthalmoscopy, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and ultrasound when media are opaque.

While “Augeninnen” is not a standard anatomical term in formal nomenclature, it is used informally to reference the inner contents of the eye. Precise terminology relies on the specific structures or spaces described above.
