Aufgussprozess

Aufgussprozess refers to the process of pouring water, often infused with essential oils or other aromatic substances, onto hot sauna stones. This action is known as "Aufguss" in German and is a traditional practice in many European saunas. The primary purpose of the Aufgussprozess is to increase the humidity and temperature within the sauna, creating a more intense and invigorating experience for the user.

The process typically involves a sauna master, or "Saunameister," who uses a ladle to pour water onto the heated stones. As the water hits the stones, it rapidly evaporates, releasing steam into the sauna air. The Saunameister then uses a towel to "wave" or "fan" the steam, distributing the hot, humid air throughout the sauna. This fanning motion is crucial as it enhances the sensation of heat on the skin and helps to cleanse and open pores.

Different types of Aufguss exist, varying by the location and the aromas used. Common essential oils include eucalyptus, menthol, pine, or citrus scents, each chosen for their perceived therapeutic or invigorating properties. The Aufgussprozess is usually performed for a set duration, often accompanied by music, and is followed by a cooling-down period.
