Aufführungspraxis, often translated as "performance practice," refers to the study and realization of how music was performed in past eras. It encompasses a wide range of elements that contribute to the authentic sound of historical music. This includes understanding the instruments available at the time, their construction, and how they were played. It also involves deciphering the conventions of vocal techniques, ornamentation, and improvisation that were common.

The study of Aufführungspraxis also delves into the surviving musical sources themselves. This involves examining manuscripts and early printed editions for clues about tempo, dynamics, articulation, and even the intended emotional expression. Furthermore, it considers the social and cultural context in which the music was created and performed, as this often influenced performance decisions. The goal is not necessarily to perfectly recreate a past performance, which is impossible, but rather to make informed decisions that bring historical music to life in a way that is historically sensitive and artistically compelling. This field has significantly impacted how Baroque, Classical, and even earlier music is presented today.
