Audiotoxins

Audiotoxins are substances that can cause damage to the auditory system, leading to hearing loss or tinnitus. While the term is often used in a general sense, it most commonly refers to agents that induce ototoxicity, a specific form of damage to the inner ear. These agents can be environmental, occupational, or therapeutic.

One significant category of audiotoxins includes certain medications. For example, some antibiotics, particularly aminoglycosides like gentamicin and streptomycin, are known to be ototoxic. Chemotherapy drugs, such as cisplatin, are also associated with hearing damage. Certain diuretics and even high doses of aspirin can also impact hearing function.

Exposure to loud noise is another well-recognized audiotoxin. Prolonged exposure to sounds above 85 decibels can lead to noise-induced hearing loss. This can occur in occupational settings like construction or manufacturing, or through recreational activities such as attending concerts or using loud personal audio devices.

Other substances can also act as audiotoxins. Heavy metals like lead and mercury have been implicated in auditory damage. Certain chemicals, including solvents and pesticides, can also contribute to ototoxicity. The mechanisms by which these substances cause damage vary, but often involve disruption of the delicate hair cells within the cochlea, which are responsible for converting sound vibrations into electrical signals that the brain interprets as sound. Early identification and avoidance of known audiotoxins are crucial for preserving hearing health.
