AttributionNoDerivatives

AttributionNoDerivatives, often abbreviated as AND, is a legal condition associated with some Creative Commons licenses. It is not a standalone license itself, but rather a component that can be applied to certain Creative Commons licenses. When a license includes the "NoDerivatives" element, it means that the licensed work cannot be altered, transformed, or built upon by subsequent users. In essence, anyone wishing to share or reuse the work must do so in its original, unaltered form.

This restriction allows creators to maintain strict control over how their work is presented and used. For example, an artist might use a CC BY-ND license for a photograph to ensure that it is shared exactly as they created it, without any cropping, color adjustments, or other modifications. The "Attribution" part of the condition, common to most Creative Commons licenses, still requires users to give appropriate credit to the original creator. This means that even when using a work under an AND condition, the user must clearly indicate the source and author.

The NoDerivatives element is typically found in combination with other Creative Commons license elements, such as Attribution (BY) or Attribution-ShareAlike (BY-SA). For instance, a CC BY-ND license permits sharing and use of the work as is, provided attribution is given. A CC BY-NC-ND license adds the NonCommercial (NC) restriction, meaning the work cannot be used for commercial purposes without permission, in addition to the attribution and no-derivatives requirements. The primary purpose of the NoDerivatives condition is to prevent the creation of derivative works, ensuring the original integrity of the creative expression.
