Attentioncritical is a term used in psychology, human factors, and design to denote tasks, signals, or contexts that require sustained, high-level attention. When a system or process is attentioncritical, lapses in perception or memory can lead to errors, safety risks, or operational failures. The concept encompasses both the properties of stimuli (salience, urgency, novelty) and the cognitive demands placed on the individual (working memory load, task switching, time pressure).

In practice, attentioncritical cues are designed to be noticeable and easily interpretable to prevent missed information or unsafe actions. Examples include critical alerts in aviation and medical monitoring dashboards, which are prioritized for rapid recognition; and safety prompts in consumer devices that interrupt ongoing activity to avert mistakes. The term also appears in discussions of workstation layout, alarm design, and interface workflows that support situational awareness.

Measurement and research on attentioncritical use methods such as eye-tracking, workload assessment, and reaction-time tasks to quantify detection rates, latency, and error frequency. Studies examine how interface design, display modality, and automation influence the likelihood of attention lapses in high-stakes environments.

Terminology is not standardized across disciplines, and attentioncritical can be used variably to refer to momentary attention demands or longer-term attentional state. It overlaps with concepts like vigilance, situational awareness, and safety-critical design, and should be distinguished from general attention or attention as a cognitive resource.
