Atsetaat

Atsetaat is a chemical term referring to the anion derived from acetic acid, with the chemical formula CH3COO−. It is also used to describe any salt or ester of acetic acid. In organic chemistry, the acetate functional group is a common moiety.

Acetate salts are formed when acetic acid reacts with bases. For example, sodium acetate (CH3COONa) is a common example, often used as a food additive and in textile dyeing. Potassium acetate (CH3COOK) has applications as a de-icing agent and in fire extinguishers.

Esters of acetic acid, also referred to as acetates, are formed through the esterification reaction between acetic acid and an alcohol. Examples include ethyl acetate (CH3COOCH2CH3), a widely used solvent for paints, lacquers, and varnishes, and vinyl acetate (CH3COOCH=CH2), a precursor to polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol. Cellulose acetate is another important derivative, used in photographic film, textiles, and cigarette filters.

The acetate ion plays a crucial role in biological systems. It is a key intermediate in metabolism, particularly in the breakdown of carbohydrates and fats. Acetyl-CoA, which contains the acetyl group, is central to the citric acid cycle.
