Atseetüülhappega refers to acetylsalicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin. It is a medication used to treat pain, fever, and inflammation. It is also used long-term, at lower doses, to help prevent heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots in people at high risk. Aspirin belongs to a class of drugs called salicylates. It works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

Acetylsalicylic acid was first synthesized in 1853 by Charles Frédéric Gerhardt. However, its therapeutic properties were not fully recognized until later. In 1897, Felix Hoffmann, a chemist at Bayer, synthesized aspirin in a purer form, and it was introduced to the market in 1899. It quickly became one of the most widely used drugs in the world.

Aspirin is available over-the-counter and by prescription. It can be taken orally in tablet or capsule form, or rectally as a suppository. Common side effects include stomach upset, heartburn, and nausea. More serious side effects can include stomach bleeding, allergic reactions, and Reye's syndrome in children and teenagers with viral infections. Due to the risk of Reye's syndrome, aspirin is generally not recommended for individuals under 18 years old.

In addition to its medicinal uses, acetylsalicylic acid has been investigated for potential cancer-preventive properties, particularly for colorectal cancer. Research suggests that regular, long-term use of low-dose aspirin may reduce the risk of developing and dying from certain types of cancer. However, this use should be discussed with a healthcare professional due to potential risks.
