Astrofys

Astrofys is a term used to describe an approach or subdiscipline that focuses on the physical processes governing astronomical phenomena. It emphasizes constructing physics-based explanations for observations of stars, galaxies, and the cosmos, often through a combination of analytical theory, numerical modeling, and observation.

Core topics include radiative processes, plasma physics, magnetohydrodynamics, nuclear physics in stellar cores and explosive events, accretion physics around compact objects, planetary atmospheres, and the dynamics of interstellar and intergalactic media. Researchers aim to derive predictive models for phenomena such as stellar evolution, supernovae, accretion disks, jets, galaxy formation, and cosmological structure growth.

Methods used in astrofys span observational and computational techniques. Observations across the electromagnetic spectrum provide data on spectra, light curves, and kinematics. Theoretical work relies on fluid dynamics, radiative transfer, quantum and nuclear physics, and statistical mechanics. Large-scale simulations—hydrodynamic, magnetohydrodynamic, and radiative transfer—are common, often coupled with machine learning and data analysis. Laboratory plasma experiments and calibration efforts help test physical assumptions.

In practice, astrofys is often treated as synonymous with astrophysics or as a subfield emphasizing physical mechanisms. It is studied within physics or astronomy departments, with curricula drawn from both domains. The term is more prevalent in certain regional or institutional contexts and in science communication, rather than as a universally standardized discipline.
