Assistido

Assistido is a Portuguese term that functions as the past participle of the verb assistir and as an adjective or noun in various contexts. It has two broad semantic strands: it can indicate that something has been watched or attended, and it can designate a person who has received assistance or services.

As a participle or adjective, assistido describes actions or states related to watching or attending. For example, in a film or show context, one might say “o filme foi assistido” to mean that the film has been watched. In a care or service context, the sense of being attended to is common, as in “ele foi assistido pela equipe médica,” meaning he was attended to or cared for by the medical team. The sense of attendance can also apply to events or sessions, such as a meeting or class.

As a noun, assistido can refer to a person who receives aid or services from a program or institution. In bureaucratic or social policy language, it is used to denote a beneficiary or recipient of assistance, for example “os assistidos pelo programa social.” In this usage, feminine form assistida is also possible when referring to a female recipient.

Etymology and variants: assistido derives from assister/assistir, with the sense evolution tied to attending, helping, or observing. In European and Brazilian Portuguese, the two main meanings—watched/attended and recipient of assistance—are recognized, with subtle usage differences across regions and formal contexts.
