Aspiraattinäytteen, or aspirate sample in English, refers to a biological sample collected through aspiration. Aspiration is a medical procedure where a needle or other instrument is used to withdraw fluid, cells, or tissue from a body cavity, organ, or lesion. This technique is commonly employed for diagnostic purposes, allowing medical professionals to analyze the contents for the presence of diseases, infections, or other abnormalities.

The process typically involves using a syringe attached to a needle. The needle is inserted into the target area, and negative pressure is applied to the syringe to draw out the material. The collected material can then be sent to a laboratory for various tests, such as cytology, histology, or microbiology. Cytology, for instance, examines the cells to detect cancerous or precancerous changes. Histology involves the microscopic examination of tissue structure. Microbiology tests help identify infectious agents like bacteria or fungi.

Common sites for aspiration include lymph nodes, cysts, the thyroid gland, bone marrow, and pleural or peritoneal cavities. The type of aspirate sample and the specific tests performed depend on the suspected condition and the location from which the sample is taken.
