Askatasuna
Askatasuna was a Basque separatist organization founded in 1979. It emerged from within the radical left nationalist movement in the Basque Country. The organization advocated for the independence of the Basque Country from Spain and France and the creation of a socialist state. Askatasuna claimed to be the political wing of the armed group ETA, although this relationship was often disputed and subject to debate. Its activities included organizing demonstrations, rallies, and distributing political propaganda. Askatasuna was also known for its involvement in supporting prisoners associated with ETA and other Basque militant groups. The organization faced legal scrutiny and was outlawed by Spanish authorities in the early 2000s due to its alleged links to terrorism. Despite being banned, elements associated with Askatasuna continued to operate in various forms, often focusing on issues related to Basque political prisoners and self-determination. Its legacy is intertwined with the broader Basque conflict and the long history of separatism in the region.
