Ascension

Ascension refers to the act of rising, climbing, or moving upward. The term comes from the Latin ascendere, with the participial form ascensus; in secular use it describes rising in height, status, or rank and is applied to physical ascent, ascent to office, or metaphorical ascent.

In Christianity, the Ascension denotes Jesus Christ's return to heaven after his Resurrection, described in the New Testament. It is traditionally observed forty days after Easter and marks the completion of the biblical narrative of Jesus’ earthly work; theological significance includes the exaltation of Christ, intercession, and the sending of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Liturgical celebrations vary by denomination, including feast days and processions.

Geography and culture: Ascension Island is a remote Atlantic island named after Ascension Day when it was discovered by Portuguese navigators in the early 16th century; today it is part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, hosting a small population and a notable optical and meteorological infrastructure. The term also appears in film, literature, and music as a motif for ascent or spiritual elevation.

Other uses: In general usage, ascension contrasts with ascent; ascension is more common in religious or formal contexts and as a noun indicating rise to power or heavenward movement.
