Arvonlisäverotiedot refers to the information and data related to value-added tax (VAT) in Finland. It covers the structure of the VAT system, the rates that apply to different goods and services, registration requirements for businesses, reporting obligations, invoicing rules, and the data held by the Finnish Tax Administration (Verohallinto). The concept is used by businesses, accountants, policymakers, and researchers to understand how VAT is applied in the sale and purchase of goods and services.

In Finland, arvonlisävero is a consumption tax collected on most goods and services. The tax is charged by the seller and remitted to Verohallinto. At each stage of the supply chain, VAT is calculated on the value added, while businesses can generally deduct the VAT paid on their own purchases (input VAT) from the VAT charged on their sales (output VAT).

Registration and liability: Businesses must register for VAT if their taxable turnover exceeds certain thresholds or if they engage in activities requiring VAT registration. A VAT number (ALV-numero) is issued to registered traders and is used for invoicing and intra-EU transactions.

Rates and exemptions: Finland uses a tiered rate structure, with a standard rate and one or more reduced rates for specific categories of goods and services. Some activities are exempt from VAT or outside the VAT system, such as certain financial services or health care.

Reporting and administration: VAT returns are filed periodically (often monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly) through Verohallinto’s online services, with payment due by specified deadlines. Businesses must maintain records for a defined period to support VAT calculations and audits. In cross-border trade within the EU, separate mechanisms such as the One-Stop Shop may apply.
