Arviointimetrit, or evaluation periods, refer to specific time frames during which students’ academic performance is assessed in Finnish education. These periods are structured to provide regular feedback on students’ progress and to help them, as well as teachers, identify areas for improvement. Arviointimetrit are a key component of Finland’s educational system, particularly in basic education (peruskoulu) and upper secondary education (lukio).

In Finnish schools, arviointimetrit typically occur at the end of each grading period, which are usually divided into two main segments: the autumn term and the spring term. Each term is further divided into shorter evaluation phases, often lasting around six to eight weeks. During these phases, teachers monitor students’ work, participation, and understanding of the curriculum. At the end of each phase, a formal evaluation takes place, where grades are assigned based on the student’s performance in various subjects.
