Arveths

Arveths are a sapient, plant-like species described in the fantasy setting of Eldoria. They are anchored to the forest floor by a central root mass, with flexible fronds that function as limbs and sensory organs. Their bodies are capable of limited self-transport by reconfiguring their root connections, but they largely remain stationary, drawing nutrients from soil and light. They communicate via bioluminescent patterns in their fronds and a chemical tongue released through the air and via touch.

Ecology and habitat: Arveths inhabit temperate and montane forests, often forming interconnected groves that share resources and information. They have a symbiotic relationship with fungi that helps extract minerals and with trees that provide shelter. They rely on photosynthesis for energy, supplemented by soil nutrients.

Social structure and culture: Each grove forms a polity with a council of elder Arveths; leadership is consensus-based and rotates. Memory is stored in luminescent nodes along the fronds; knowledge is transmitted during seasonal lit events when groves align.

Reproduction and development: Propagation occurs through seed-like propagules released from flowering shafts; when conditions are suitable, propagules anchor to a host tree and grow into new Arveths, forming new groves.

In fiction and study: In literature, Arveths are portrayed as guardians of old forest networks; they feature in eco-spiritual themes; scholars discuss their unique mode of communication and long lifespans.
