Artroproteesi

Artroproteesi, commonly known as joint replacement surgery, is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged or diseased joint with an artificial prosthetic joint. The most frequent joints to undergo arthroplasty are the hip and knee, although other joints such as the shoulder, elbow, ankle, and fingers can also be replaced. The primary goal of arthroplasty is to relieve pain and restore function in a joint that has been impaired by conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or severe injury.

The prosthetic joint is typically made of metal alloys, plastic, and polymers. The components are designed to mimic the natural movement of the original joint. During the surgery, the damaged bone and cartilage are removed and the artificial components are then implanted. Recovery from arthroplasty involves a period of rehabilitation, including physical therapy, to regain strength and mobility. While generally successful in improving quality of life for patients, potential risks include infection, blood clots, loosening of the prosthesis, and nerve damage. The lifespan of a prosthetic joint can vary, and in some cases, revision surgery may be necessary.
