Artesianos

Artesianos refers to artesian wells, a type of well in which groundwater rises naturally due to hydraulic pressure in a confined aquifer. The term artésien comes from the French puits artésien, historically linked to wells in the Artois region of northern France where the phenomenon was first described.

The hydrogeology involves a confined aquifer sandwiched between impermeable layers. Recharge occurs at a higher elevation than the well location, creating a pressurized water column. When a borehole intersects the aquifer, the internal pressure can push water upward and, in favorable cases, above ground level. A flowing artesian well emits water at the surface without pumping. If the potentiometric surface is below the land surface, the water may rise in the borehole but still require pumping to reach the surface.

Artesian wells have been used for municipal supply, irrigation, and private water needs, particularly in regions where aquifers under natural pressure are accessible. They remain important in some basins worldwide, such as the Great Artesian Basin in Australia, among others.

Management considerations include protecting recharge areas, monitoring hydraulic head to prevent over-extraction, and preventing contamination or saltwater intrusion. Excessive pumping can lower the potentiometric surface, reduce natural flow, cause subsidence, or degrade water quality. In modern practice, artesian wells are designed with equipment to control flow and protect the aquifer while meeting water demand.
