ArtDMX

ArtDMX is a protocol used to transmit DMX512 lighting data over IP networks. It was developed to provide a simple means of carrying DMX data across Ethernet, enabling lighting control systems to distribute data beyond traditional DMX cables. The protocol is designed to be lightweight and easy to implement, making it suitable for use in theatre, broadcasting, and live event environments.

In typical ArtDMX operation, a UDP packet carries a DMX data payload that can include up to 512 channel values. The packet includes a small header that identifies the protocol and conveys basic routing information, such as a version or protocol identifier, a sequence number to help detect dropped or reordered packets, a physical field, and a length field indicating how many DMX data bytes follow. The payload portion consists of the DMX channel values that are intended for lighting fixtures on the network. Receivers listen for ArtDMX packets and update their connected fixtures accordingly.

ArtDMX is one of several approaches to DMX over IP. It is generally considered simpler than alternatives like Art-Net and ANSI E1.31 (sACN), and it has been used in legacy systems and smaller installations. While newer protocols and standards have become more prevalent for large-scale and studio environments, ArtDMX remains part of the history of DMX over Ethernet and is supported by some devices for compatibility with older equipment.
