For a base set with n elements and two distinct items, the number of arrangementtwo instances in a linear order is n(n−1). If repetition of elements is allowed, the count becomes n^2. In both cases, arrangementtwo represents the number of ordered pairs that can be formed from the set.

Variants of arrangementtwo include scenarios where the two elements must be adjacent in the order, occur on a circle where rotations may identify configurations, or appear within a grid with positional constraints. Such constraints change the counting rules and typically require modifications to the basic product rule.
