Armillary

Armillary, in a scholarly sense, refers to anything related to an armillary sphere or composed of rings that model the celestial sphere. The term derives from Latin armilla, meaning bracelet or ring, reflecting the ringed construction of these instruments.

An armillary sphere is a skeletal framework of interlocking metal rings arranged to represent the major circles of the heavens. Typical rings include the celestial equator, the ecliptic, and various meridians and parallels. Some designs also include tropic rings and a polar axis. The rings are mounted on a stand and can be rotated and tilted to demonstrate the apparent motions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars as viewed from Earth. A central element, often a globe, may symbolize Earth or the Sun, depending on the model.

Historically, armillary spheres originated in the Hellenistic world and were further developed by Islamic astronomers before being adopted and refined in medieval and Renaissance Europe. They served as educational tools in universities and observatories, helping students visualize celestial coordinates and the mechanics of the sky.
