Arenguteooria, also known as development theory, encompasses a broad range of academic disciplines and perspectives that seek to understand and explain the processes of societal, economic, and human development. These theories explore how societies change over time, the factors that drive these changes, and the outcomes that result. Early theories often focused on modernization, suggesting a linear progression from traditional to modern societies, often with a Western model as the benchmark. These early ideas, prevalent in the mid-20th century, posited that developing nations needed to adopt Western values, institutions, and technologies to achieve prosperity.

Later critiques and alternative perspectives emerged, challenging the ethnocentric nature of modernization theory. Dependency theory, for instance, argued that the development of some nations was intrinsically linked to the underdevelopment of others, due to historical power imbalances and exploitative economic relationships. World-systems theory further expanded on this, viewing the global economy as a system with core, periphery, and semi-periphery nations, where the flow of resources predominantly benefits the core.

Contemporary arenguteooria is more nuanced, incorporating concepts like sustainable development, human development, and endogenous development. Sustainable development emphasizes balancing economic growth with environmental protection and social equity. Human development focuses on expanding people's capabilities and freedoms, looking beyond mere economic indicators to measure progress. Endogenous development stresses the importance of local knowledge, resources, and cultural contexts in driving development from within. The field continues to evolve, engaging with issues of globalization, inequality, governance, and technological change.
