Arenguperioodiks

Arenguperioodiks, also known as the "period of awakening," is a term used in Estonian history to describe a period of cultural and political awakening that occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This period was marked by a renewed interest in Estonian language, literature, and national identity, which had been suppressed during the Russian Empire's rule. The term "arenguperioodiks" translates to "period of development" or "period of growth," reflecting the sense of progress and renewal that characterized this era.

The roots of arenguperioodiks can be traced back to the 1860s, when a group of young Estonians, known as the "Estonian Awakening" movement, began to advocate for the use of the Estonian language in education and public life. This movement was influenced by the broader European trend of nationalism and the desire for cultural autonomy. The period saw the establishment of the first Estonian-language newspaper, "Postimees," in 1869, and the founding of the Estonian Literary Society in 1872.

The arenguperioodiks was also a time of political activism. In 1893, the Estonian National Awakening Party was formed, which advocated for greater autonomy for Estonia within the Russian Empire. This party played a significant role in the development of the Estonian national movement and the eventual establishment of the Estonian Republic in 1918.

The arenguperioodiks ended with the outbreak of World War I in 1914, which led to the Russian Empire's collapse and the subsequent independence of Estonia. However, the legacy of this period of awakening continues to influence Estonian culture and politics, serving as a reminder of the importance of preserving and promoting national identity.
