In many works of fiction, Archivari work within an Archive, Archivarium, or City Vault, combining scholarly research with conservation, cataloging, and negotiation of access rights. They may perform paleographic transcription, describe materials with metadata, and apply digital preservation techniques such as format migration and bit-level integrity checks.

In real-world practice, archivists perform similar functions, and some writers adopt the title Archivarin to evoke an ancient or guild-like role.
