Archabbot

An Archabbot is the abbot of an archabbey, a designation given to an abbey of particular importance, dignity, or historical significance. The title is a rank above that of a regular abbot. Archabbots typically have jurisdiction over several other abbeys and monasteries within their territory. The role carries significant spiritual and administrative responsibilities.

The office of Archabbot is found primarily within certain monastic orders, most notably the Benedictine Order. While the specific privileges and responsibilities can vary depending on the order and the specific archabbey, an Archabbot generally holds a position of leadership and oversight for a larger monastic community or network of communities. Their authority extends beyond the governance of their own archabbey to include a broader pastoral and administrative role.
