Arbutoid

An arbutoid is a type of mycorrhizal root structure formed by certain plants in association with the fungus Arbutus andromeda, commonly known as madrona or madrona tree. This specialized symbiotic relationship exists primarily within the Ericaceae family and is characterized by a hybrid form that combines features of both ectomycorrhizae and ericoid mycorrhizae.

In arbutoids, the fungal hyphae extend into the root cortex, forming a mantle around the root's exterior similar to ectomycorrhizae, while also penetrating the root cells, which is typical of ericoid mycorrhizae. This dual interaction enhances nutrient exchange between the plant and fungus, especially in nutrient-poor soils, aiding in plant growth and stress tolerance.

The formation of arbutoids is significant in certain forest ecosystems, particularly in regions where Arbutus species are native, such as parts of North America and the Mediterranean. The mycorrhizal association benefits both partners: the fungus gains access to plant carbohydrates, and the plant benefits from improved nutrient absorption, particularly of phosphorus and nitrogen.

Understanding arbutoids is important in mycology and plant ecology, as they represent a unique adaptation among mycorrhizal fungi and plants. They contribute to the health of forest ecosystems by supporting plant resilience and soil health.
