Arambai

Arambai is a term used in the Meitei language to refer to a type of fast, raiding unit associated with Manipuri military history, and in modern times it has also been adopted as the name of a contemporary self-styled militia group. The word and concept have been used in both historical and contemporary contexts in Manipur, India.

Historically, Arambai described rapid cavalry or raiding parties that operated as part of the Manipuri kingdom’s military system. These units were known for swift, surprise attacks and mobility in the plains and hills of Manipur, often conducting raids, gathering intelligence, and supporting broader royal military campaigns. They used light weapons and were valued for speed and agility in warfare.

In recent years, the name has been adopted by a contemporary group associated with the Meitei community. Arambai Tengba, also spelled Arambai Tengol, emerged amid ethnic tensions in Manipur around 2023 and presented itself as a volunteer force intended to protect Meitei residents. Media and observers have described the group variously as a vigilante organization or a self-styled militia, and there have been reports and allegations of involvement in violence and intimidation during episodes of ethnic unrest. The group’s activities and status have been the subject of legal and political debate, with authorities stressing the primacy of lawful processes and rule of law.

The term Arambai thus carries both historical meaning as a Military unit in Manipuri history and contemporary significance as the name of a Meitei-led militia figure in Manipur’s complex social and political landscape.
