Aquitarders
Aquitarders are geological formations that restrict the flow of groundwater. Unlike aquifers, which are permeable and transmit groundwater freely, aquitarders are characterized by their low permeability. They are typically composed of materials such as clay, siltstone, shale, or unfractured igneous and metamorphic rocks. While often referred to as "confining layers," it is important to note that no geologic material is completely impermeable; aquitarders merely impede groundwater movement at a significantly slower rate than aquifers.
The presence of aquitarders is crucial in understanding groundwater systems. They can separate distinct aquifers, preventing
