Appene

Appene is a modular, cross-platform application platform and framework designed for developers and organizations. It provides a runtime and a collection of APIs that enable building, deploying, and managing modular software components. The project emphasizes extensibility, security, and performance, supporting applications assembled from loosely coupled plugins.

Originating in 2016 from an international collaboration of independent developers, Appene evolved through open-source contributions and corporate sponsorship. The project adopted a formal governance model and seasoned release cycles, with periodic long-term support versions and community-driven extension points that encourage interoperability among plugins and host applications.

Architecturally, Appene centers on a microkernel that hosts plugins, enforces lifecycle management, and provides resource isolation. The platform supports WebAssembly for plugin execution, a manifest-based compatibility check, and a permission system to limit capabilities.
