Appendkirjoitukset, also known as append-only logs, are a data structure used in computer science and databases to store a sequence of records in a way that only allows new records to be added to the end of the log. This approach ensures that once a record is written, it cannot be modified or deleted, preserving the integrity and order of the data. Append-only logs are commonly used in systems that require high write throughput and fault tolerance, such as distributed databases, message queues, and log-based storage systems.

The primary advantage of append-only logs is their simplicity and efficiency in write operations. Since new records are always appended to the end of the log, the system can optimize write performance by minimizing the need for random access and reducing the overhead associated with maintaining complex data structures. Additionally, append-only logs are highly resilient to failures, as the append operation is typically atomic and can be easily recovered from in the event of a crash.

However, append-only logs also have limitations. As the log grows, it can become large and unwieldy, requiring periodic compaction or archiving to manage storage space. Furthermore, the lack of in-place updates can lead to inefficiencies in read operations, as the system may need to scan through the entire log to retrieve specific records. To address these challenges, various techniques such as indexing, log segmentation, and compaction algorithms have been developed to enhance the performance and manageability of append-only logs.
