ApoEn3

ApoEn3 is a naturally occurring apolipoprotein found in human plasma. It is a variant of apolipoprotein E (ApoE), a protein that plays a crucial role in lipid metabolism and transport. ApoE exists in three common isoforms: ApoE2, ApoE3, and ApoE4, which differ in their amino acid sequences. ApoEn3 represents the most common isoform, ApoE3, and is considered the ancestral and neutral form.

ApoEn3 is involved in the binding and uptake of lipoproteins, particularly chylomicrons and very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), by cells. It facilitates the clearance of these lipid particles from the bloodstream and their delivery to tissues for energy or storage. This function is essential for maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and preventing the accumulation of fats in arteries.

The ApoEn3 isoform is generally associated with an average risk for cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's disease, unlike the ApoE4 isoform which is linked to increased risk. While ApoE3 is considered the baseline, research continues to explore the subtle impacts of all ApoE isoforms on various physiological processes beyond lipid metabolism, including neuronal function and immune responses.
