Apinkybalenia
Apinkybalenia is a genus of prehistoric marine reptiles belonging to the order Ichthyosauria. It lived during the Middle Jurassic period, approximately 168.3 to 166.1 million years ago. The type species, Apinkybalenia kanzai, was named after the Japanese paleontologist Katsumi Kanzai, who discovered the fossils in the Koshien area of Japan. Apinkybalenia is notable for its elongated body and large, paddle-like flippers, which are characteristic features of ichthyosaurs. The genus is known from a nearly complete skeleton, including the skull, which provides insights into the animal's anatomy and potentially its diet. The skull of Apinkybalenia exhibits a unique combination of features, such as a long, slender snout and a large number of small teeth, which may indicate a specialized feeding strategy. The discovery of Apinkybalenia has contributed to the understanding of ichthyosaur evolution and diversity during the Middle Jurassic period. The fossils of Apinkybalenia were first described in 2010 and have since been studied by paleontologists to better understand the ecology and behavior of these ancient marine reptiles.
