1683 was a year in the late 17th century notable for a decisive military engagement in Europe. In July, the Ottoman Empire laid siege to Vienna, capital of the Habsburg Monarchy, during the Great Turkish War. After five weeks, the city was relieved by a coalition led by King John III Sobieski of Poland. On 12 September 1683, Sobieski’s forces, including the famed Winged Hussars, delivered a decisive blow to the Ottoman army, breaking the siege and forcing its retreat. The victory is often cited as a turning point that halted Ottoman expansion into Central Europe and shifted momentum to the Holy League.
