Apatista

Apatista refers to a person who identifies with or supports the Zapatista Army of National Liberation, commonly known as the EZLN. The Zapatistas are a left-wing revolutionary group that emerged in Chiapas, Mexico, in 1994. They are known for their advocacy for indigenous rights, autonomy, and a more democratic and just society.

The EZLN declared armed rebellion against the Mexican state on January 1, 1994, coinciding with the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Their initial demands focused on land rights, democracy, justice, and dignity for indigenous communities. While they initially engaged in armed struggle, the Zapatistas have since emphasized political and social organizing, establishing autonomous municipalities and self-governing structures in areas under their influence.

An apatista is someone who aligns with the Zapatista ideals and struggles, whether they are indigenous to Chiapas, Mexican citizens, or international supporters. Their support can manifest in various ways, including participating in solidarity networks, raising awareness about the Zapatista movement, advocating for indigenous rights globally, and engaging in direct action or political activism aligned with Zapatista principles. The movement has inspired many globally, becoming a symbol of resistance against neoliberalism and a model for grassroots democracy and indigenous self-determination.
