Anästhesiepflegende, also known as anesthesia nurses, are registered nurses who specialize in the care of patients before, during, and after surgical or invasive procedures. Their role is crucial in ensuring patient safety and comfort throughout the anesthetic process. Anesthesia nurses work closely with anesthesiologists and surgeons as part of the perioperative team.

Their responsibilities begin with a pre-operative assessment, where they evaluate the patient's medical history, current condition, and any potential risks associated with anesthesia. They prepare the patient for the procedure, administer pre-medications, and monitor vital signs. During anesthesia, they continuously observe the patient's physiological status, manage anesthetic agents, administer fluids and medications as directed by the anesthesiologist, and respond to any emergencies or changes in the patient's condition.

Post-operatively, anesthesia nurses monitor the patient's recovery from anesthesia in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). They manage pain, nausea, and other side effects, and ensure the patient is stable before transferring them to a recovery room or ward. Anesthesia nurses require extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and critical care principles. They often hold specialized certifications in their field. Their dedication and expertise are vital for successful and safe anesthetic care.
