Antriebsgelenke

Antriebsgelenke, also known as universal joints or U-joints, are mechanical components designed to transmit rotational motion between two shafts that are not aligned. Their primary function is to accommodate misalignment, allowing for changes in the angle between the connected shafts while maintaining continuous power transmission.

These joints typically consist of a pair of hinges, often referred to as yokes, connected by a cross-shaped spider. Each yoke is attached to the end of a shaft, and the spider is centered between them. As the shafts rotate and change their relative angle, the spider pivots within the yokes, enabling the connection to flex.

Antriebsgelenke are widely used in automotive drivetrains, particularly in rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive systems, to connect the transmission or transfer case to the differential. They are also found in industrial machinery, agricultural equipment, and various other applications where flexible power transmission is required.

While a single universal joint can transmit torque, it introduces speed fluctuations in the output shaft if the angle is not zero. This is because the rotational velocity of the output shaft varies cyclically during each revolution. To counteract this effect and achieve constant velocity, two universal joints are often used in combination, typically arranged in a specific manner or by employing constant velocity (CV) joints, which are a more advanced type of drive joint designed to eliminate speed fluctuations. The proper selection and installation of Antriebsgelenke are crucial for ensuring smooth operation and preventing premature wear.
