Antiulcerative

Antiulcerative refers to any substance or treatment that prevents or helps heal ulcers, particularly peptic ulcers of the stomach and duodenum. These agents work through various mechanisms to reduce the damage to the gastrointestinal lining or promote its repair. Common antiulcerative strategies include reducing the production of stomach acid, protecting the stomach lining from acid, and eradicating the bacteria Helicobacter pylori, which is a common cause of peptic ulcers.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a widely used class of antiulcerative drugs that significantly reduce stomach acid secretion by blocking the enzyme responsible for acid production. H2 receptor antagonists are another group of medications that also reduce acid output by blocking histamine receptors in the stomach. Antacids provide rapid, but temporary, relief by neutralizing existing stomach acid. Mucosal protective agents, such as sucralfate, form a barrier over the ulcer site, shielding it from further damage by acid and enzymes. Bismuth subsalicylate can also contribute to ulcer healing by coating the ulcer and possessing antibacterial properties against H. pylori. Eradication of H. pylori typically involves a combination of antibiotics and a PPI. Lifestyle modifications, like avoiding irritants such as NSAIDs, alcohol, and smoking, are also considered crucial components of antiulcerative therapy.
