Antihisztaminkészítmények

Antihisztaminkészítmények, commonly known as antihistamines, are a class of drugs that counteract the effects of histamine. Histamine is a chemical produced by the body's immune system that plays a role in allergic reactions, inflammation, and the regulation of stomach acid. Antihistamines work by blocking histamine receptors, primarily the H1 receptors, which are responsible for mediating many of the symptoms associated with allergies.

These medications are widely used to treat a variety of allergic conditions, including hay fever (allergic rhinitis), urticaria (hives), allergic conjunctivitis, and insect bite reactions. Symptoms they help alleviate include sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, skin rashes, and swelling. Antihistamines are available in various forms, such as oral tablets, capsules, syrups, nasal sprays, and eye drops.

There are several generations of antihistamines. First-generation antihistamines, like diphenhydramine and chlorpheniramine, are known for their sedative effects because they can cross the blood-brain barrier and affect the central nervous system. Newer, second-generation and third-generation antihistamines, such as loratadine, cetirizine, and fexofenadine, are generally non-sedating or less sedating as they do not readily cross the blood-brain barrier.

While effective for symptom relief, antihistamines do not cure allergies. They are typically used on an as-needed basis or as part of a long-term management strategy for chronic allergic conditions. Potential side effects can vary depending on the generation and individual response but may include drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, and blurred vision.
