Antigenikohtainen, or "antigen-specific," refers to a targeted approach in immunology and medicine that focuses on eliciting an immune response against specific antigens rather than broadly activating the immune system. Antigens are molecules, typically proteins, that can be recognized by the immune system, often triggering an immune reaction. Antigen-specific strategies are central to the development of vaccines and certain immunotherapies, as they aim to provoke a precise and controlled immune response against particular pathogens or abnormal cells, such as those found in cancer.

In vaccine development, antigen-specific approaches involve identifying key antigens from pathogens—such as viruses or bacteria—and designing vaccines to stimulate an immune response against those specific targets. This precision minimizes unnecessary immune activation, reducing side effects while enhancing efficacy. For example, mRNA vaccines, such as those used against COVID-19, encode specific viral proteins, allowing the body to produce antigens that trigger an adaptive immune response.

Antigen-specific therapies are also employed in cancer treatment, where tumor-associated antigens are targeted to stimulate the immune system to attack cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. Techniques like adoptive cell transfer and checkpoint inhibitors rely on redirecting immune cells to recognize and destroy antigen-bearing cells. This targeted approach improves safety and effectiveness compared to broader immunosuppressive or cytotoxic treatments.
