Antiextractivist

Antiextractivism is a socio-political and environmental stance that opposes large-scale extraction of natural resources, particularly minerals, fossil fuels, and timber. Proponents of antiextractivism argue that such activities lead to significant environmental degradation, social disruption, and economic dependency. They often highlight the irreversible damage to ecosystems, including deforestation, water pollution, and soil erosion, as well as the impact on biodiversity.

Furthermore, antiextractivist movements frequently point to the social consequences, such as the displacement of indigenous communities, the violation of human rights, and the exacerbation of inequalities. They contend that resource extraction often benefits multinational corporations and a select elite, while local populations bear the brunt of the environmental and social costs.

The economic critique of extractivism centers on the concept of the "resource curse," where countries heavily reliant on natural resource exports experience slower economic growth and development compared to those with diversified economies. Antiextractivists advocate for alternative economic models that prioritize sustainability, local self-sufficiency, and equitable distribution of wealth. They promote practices like regenerative agriculture, renewable energy, and community-based resource management.
