A dipole antenna, for instance, typically consists of two conductive rods or wires placed end-to-end, with the transmitter or receiver connected at the center gap. The length of a dipole element is often related to the wavelength of the radio waves it is designed to transmit or receive, commonly being half a wavelength. Monopole antennas, on the other hand, use a single conductive element mounted over a ground plane. Loop antennas are formed by a closed loop of conductive material, and patch antennas are typically flat, metallic shapes etched onto a dielectric substrate. The performance of an antenna is directly influenced by the properties of its elements, making their careful design and construction crucial for effective wireless communication.
